I think we discovered the true necessities of a kid’s birthday party: a weather radio, a clean a basement and an unlimited amount of Elsa's "Bad Juan" margaritas.
After a month of planning (and two full days of serious party prepping), our efforts might have been off the mark. Yes we had cake. Yes we had a hot dog theme. And yes we had 17 kids wearing party hats and blowing party horns. But the essential items came into play just moments after the first hail storm, which hit just seconds before we lighted the candles and sent all guests – kids, adults and canines – into a short sprint from the deck into the house to re-gather around the cakes (yes plural) and finish the ‘Happy Birthday” song. Despite the initial excitement (and storm), we concluded all traditional party activities, but were soon forced to watch the Doppler radar and keep all remaining guests confined to the basement due to numerous tornado warnings for Clermont County (and up to date news reports of roofs being blown off buildings in Loveland).
Luckily, all the kids enjoyed the new scenery and inherit right to run around and scream as loud as you can when you are in an unfinished basement, while the tequila drink of choice took the edge of the situation for most the adults.
Overall, the party was a hit, and the kids enjoyed every moment despite the weather. From family to neighbors to old friends, we were in good company and the combo birthday party might have to be repeated again someday after we get done trying out all our celebration options.
