Why do we have a day off school In October?

Alex had an assignment in class yesterday where he had to answer the question: What do you know about Christopher Columbus? His written response: “I do not know one thing about Christopher Columbus.”

I like that he is honest and direct, but now thinking I should have at least mentioned something on Monday about the man who discovered the new world (of course leaving out any of the controversial details about Mr. Columbus forcefully taking over the land from its native inhabitants). Instead I just let my kids think it is the cool October holiday (aka. day off school) where we hike, have lunch at The Works, play at the park and do smores by the fire pit at night.

What kind of lesson is that?
