Alex was adamant that when he turned three he would be a big boy and start going on the potty. I put too much faith in the 35 month's old promise and he gave me false hope when he woke up on May 14 and asked to wear his Diego underwear. Two hours later, we were into our third pair of underwear and sweatpants and that is when I realized that I was not meant to be one of those parents with a miraculous, overnight potty training story.
Since then, we have been hard at work with incentives, tutorials and an overwhelming amount of big boy talk. But so far our golden ticket seems to be the most natural of them all ... letting him go ol’ natural. We have had three nights of complete nakedness and three nights of successful peeing in the toilet. We are not patting ourselves on the back just yet or donating left over diapers to the local women’s shelter, as we know there is still a long road ahead of us and there are way too many side effects to being pant-less that might force him back into pull-ups (too much curiosity and therefore too much hand washing).
However, this method is only fitting since Alex is routinely listening (and dancing) to his new favorite Canadian pop band – Barenaked Ladies – every morning and his sister is mastering the act of streaking (to the likes of Will Farrell in Old School) every time she is up for a diaper change. Way too much nakedness …
