A Halloween Nightmare

Although Alex had a good time dressing up as Superman, cruising up and down the street to trick-or-treat and passing out candy to all the costume clad kids, Halloween was a bit more stressful for Andy and I. Just as we are still new to parenting, we are still new to being suburbanites, and this community oriented holiday put our skills to the test.

First, our pouch light goes at 5:59 pm forcing all prompt trick-or-treaters to beg for candy around Andy on a ladder. Second, we naively mowed the lawn the day before causing wet grass clippings to attach themselves to every kid and find their way into our house. Third, we grossly underestimated the amount of candy we needed, which led us to passing out cereal bars, the small amount of candy Alex accumulated and then money by only 7:15 pm. Desperate to get it right, we sent Andy on a last minute candy run to UDF, but did not think through the forthcoming angry looks coming from parents as he drove through the neighborhood or the limited selection of candy at UDF. In the end, we ended up with cold stares, three bags of life savers and minus $10 in change.

Where was superman to save the day?
